Law Day Essay Contest

LAW DAY THEME
The Law Day 2023 theme is Cornerstones of Democracy: Civics, Civility, and Collaboration. The focus is on rebuilding trust in our institutions, respect for one another, and our willingness to collaborate to address the challenges that face our nation.
 
YOUR TASK
The Colorado Bar Association recognizes Law Day through its civics education essay contest. Youth are invited to share their thoughts about a particular topic related to the courts and U.S. government.
  • Write an essay that fits the prompt and ties in the theme of Law Day.
  • All essays should be typed using 12-point font.
  • Please include any documentation of research in a works sited page.
  • All essays must be submitted through this form by Law Day, May 1, 2023.
  • Winner will be announced on July 1, 2023
  • Winners will be published in the Colorado Lawyer July edition.
  • All winners will receive a complimentary copy of the publication.
 
This year, we pose the following questions/prompts:
 
Elementary School Contest (3rd-5th grade students)
What are the cornerstones of democracy? Why are they important?
250 words
 
Middle School Contest (6th-8th grade students)
Choose an individual in the Civil Rights Movement and explain how their actions demonstrate the values of civics, civility and collaboration.
500 words
 
High School Contest (9th-12th grade students)
Explain civics (the study of the rights and duties of citizenship) and why did the founding fathers believe them to be important to the success of the American democratic experiment in self-governance?
1000 words
