"Implicit Bias In and Out of the Courtroom"
We are all a little bit biased. Not all implicit biases are bad and having an implicit bias doesn't make us a bad person. However the biases that we are not aware of can affect decisions that we make in our jobs .. decisions about cases decisions about people, decisions about our own clients, in the community and in life including the relationships that we have with our co-workers and others in our communities. The purpose of this presentation is to help all of us recognize our own unconscious or implicit biases and be able to interrupt them. It is also about how to interrupt biases that we see in others. I will also address how the Colorado and Model Rules of Professional Conduct relate to unconscious bias.

Karen Steinhauser, The Law Office of Karen Steinhauser, PC- Karen Steinhauser is a judge, a former prosecutor, a criminal defense attorney, and an adjunct law professor at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. She is also a faculty member for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. Karen also provides presentations and workshops to lawyers and non-lawyers, government, businesses and non-profit organizations in the area of implicit/unconscious bias. Her work in the community includes serving as a former chair of the Board of Directors of the Anti-Defamation League, serving as a former Board Member for the Colorado Judicial Institute, and has served the Denver Bar Association and Colorado Bar Association in a number of different capacities, including most recently a member of the Coordinating Committee of the CBA/CJI Diversity on the Bench Coalition.
