Program Description:

The Well-Being Case for Collegiality and Civility
Presented by Chip Glaze, JD, LMFT, Colorado Lawyer Assistance Program (COLAP)
It would be difficult to overstate the importance of civility in our workplaces and in our lives generally. Research clearly demonstrates that a lack of civility negatively impacts nearly every facet of any organization, from the bottom line to employee morale. From the ubiquitous hum of societal division to incidents of bullying, a lack of civility is compromising our collective and individual health. Polling in recent years has demonstrated that the societal level of civility is consistently spiraling downward. It also increasingly clear that in addition to negatively affecting our work, incivility can damage our health. The practice of law, in and of itself, is sufficiently stressful. When encapsulated in a framework of increasing incivility, it can be toxic. This presentation will offer a brief description of the well-being concerns related to civility or the lack thereof, and will offer potential ways that lawyers can reverse the trend.
