    Jeffersonian Dinner

    Apr 25, 06:00 PM - 08:30 PM (MT)
DBA YLD Jeffersonian Dinner April 25 | 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. Maggiano's Little Italy, 500 16th St Mall Suite 150, Denver, Colorado 80202 Two of the greatest philosophers to discuss free will and punishment arose out of a 1980s comic strip. One was modeled after John Calvin, the 16th century French Historian known for his work on pre-determination. The other was created in the likeness of Thomas Hobbes, famous for his beliefs of how life was “brutish, nasty, and short” when living in a “state of nature”. These two philosophers broke down the concepts of free will, incentives, and punishment in an easily-digestible format: the Sunday funnies. Guests of the Jeffersonian Dinner will be sat at tables of 6 – 8 for a philosophical discussion over some of the best Italian food in LoDo. Join us as we get to the bottom of whether humans have free will, and whether the answer impacts how the legal system deals with blame, punishment and damages. One ticket affords a four-course dinner, including desert, and one alcoholic beverage – and of course, access to a thoughtful discission on free will with some of the sharpest minds in Denver. Save your powdered wigs for a less-saucy occasion, but don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to gain and share perspective over a fantastic meal! Please email Emma Baxter with questions.

Let All Voices Be Heard: The Critical Importance of Civil Discourse to Our Democracy

    Apr 30, 12:00 PM - 01:00 PM (MT)
Let All Voices Be Heard: The Critical Importance of Civil Discourse to Our Democracy As our society has become increasingly polarized, our ability to engage in civil discourse, particularly with those with whom we disagree, has become increasingly more difficult. This is true both in society in general and in the practice of law specifically. In honor of Law Day 2024 and its theme of Voices of Democracy, Colorado Supreme Court Justice Richard L. Gabriel will give a presentation entitled, “Let All Voices Be Heard: The Critical Importance of Civil Discourse to Our Democracy.” In this presentation, Justice Gabriel will discuss the historic importance of civil discourse throughout our country's history, the decline in our ability to engage in civil conversations with one another, and the critical importance of rediscovering our ability to communicate respectfully and productively, both in society generally and the practice of law specifically. Honorable Richard L. Gabriel was appointed to the Colorado Supreme Court in June of 2015, after serving on the Colorado Court of Appeals from 2008-15. Justice Gabriel received his B.A. in American Studies from Yale University in 1984 and his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law in 1987. Prior to his appointment to the Court of Appeals, Justice Gabriel was a long-time partner with Holme Roberts & Owen LLP (now, Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner) in Denver, where his practice focused on commercial, intellectual property, probate, and products liability litigation, including appeals, and where he headed the firm's intellectual property practice group. Justice Gabriel has received numerous awards for his service to the community, including the Denver Bar Association's Award of Merit (that Association's highest award), a Rocky Mountain Children's Law Center Champions for Children award and its In the Pursuit of Justice Lifetime Achievement Award, recognition by Marquis Who's Who as a Distinguished Humanitarian, and the Richard Marden Davis Award (given to a lawyer under the age of 40 who has combined excellence in the practice of law and creative community leadership). He is a member of the state bars of New York and Colorado, the bars of numerous federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court, and the American, Colorado, New York, and Denver Bar Associations, where he has served (and continues to serve) on many committees. Justice Gabriel is also actively involved on the board of the Colorado Judicial Institute, the executive council of the Minoru Yasui Inn of Court, and the Our Courts civics education program. He writes and speaks frequently on matters relating to the judiciary, trial and appellate practice, and professionalism. In his spare time, he plays the trumpet professionally. Applied for 1 general CLE credit. Lunch will be served for those who attend in person!

    Practicing with Professionalism - Webinar

    May 6, 09:00 AM - 04:00 PM (MT)
*Due to concerns over COVID-19, this course has been switched to live webinar only. Attending the live webinar will satisfy the requirement with the Colorado Supreme Court* Practicing with Professionalism Presented by the Colorado Supreme Court Office of Attorney Regulation and the Colorado Bar Association You must have your NCBE number (National Conference of Bar Examiners) or your Attorney Registration number to claim credit for this class! This is a MANDATORY course and REQUIRES LIVE ATTENDANCE VIA WEBINAR. The course starts promptly at 9 a.m . Declining professionalism within the legal community continues to threaten the standing of our profession in the eyes of the public, and leads to increased dissatisfaction among lawyers themselves. Therefore, maintaining high standards of professionalism within Colorado's legal community remains a high priority for the Colorado Supreme Court and the Colorado Bar Association. Professional responsibility (legal ethics) and lawyer professionalism are related but separate concepts. Professionalism is concerned with the aspirational aspects of lawyering, how lawyers should act, their commitment to our justice system, and their public service obligations. Legal ethics include, but are not limited to, the scope of representation, duties to the court and to your client, conduct while forming, representing, and terminating a relationship with a client, and a vast array of issues concerning how you manage your law practice. This course agenda embraces all values inherent in lawyer professionalism. We look forward to presenting this course to you! This course is provided by the Colorado Supreme Court Office of Attorney Regulation, and is therefore not included as part of New Lawyer Edge or Elite Pass offerings.

Learn the nuts and bolts of licensing agreements- what they do, common clauses and terms, pitfalls, and things to look for when reviewing a licensing agreement. Our speakers will walk you through the basic scaffolding of a licensing agreement and highlight areas where additional terms and clauses may be required depending on the complexity of the subject matter of the agreement. CBA-CLE will email webinar access information 24-48 hours before the program. Home studies will be available 2-3 weeks following the live program. CBA-CLE is committed to providing access, equal opportunity, and reasonable accommodation in its services, programs, and employment. You Have OneDrive - How Do You Use It? - Webinar

    May 8, 12:00 PM - 01:00 PM (MT)
Want to get something for nothing? Has that ever turned out well? Maybe yes...maybe no. But it can with cloud technology. Plenty of legal organizations subscribe to Microsoft 365 and do so primarily for Word, Excel, and Outlook. But there’s another great benefit to Microsoft 365 - whether you are a solo attorney or a multi-member firm: OneDrive. Every Microsoft 365 subscription includes one terabyte (1,000 gigabytes) of cloud storage per user. If you have three employees in the firm, each employee gets 1TB. Instead of paying for additional services, like Dropbox, use OneDrive to effectively wrangle folders, share documents (and revoke access), save videos and photos, sync locally, and manage different versions of documents. CBA-CLE and CBA have partnered with Affinity Consulting Group to bring free law practice management and technology-related resources to members and passholders. Affinity Consulting Group specializes in strategic technology and management solutions for law firms and legal departments of all sizes. Find out more about the Law Practice Management resources, access past webinars, and sign up for upcoming webinars. CBA-CLE will email webinar access information to registrants 24-48 hours before the program. Home studies will be available approximately 2-3 weeks following the live program. If disability accommodations or special assistance are needed, please contact us at clereception@cobar.org. Requests must be made at least two weeks prior to the scheduled program. The program will be submitted for CLE accreditation in Colorado. If you need to seek accreditation in another state, please review the process and requirements for that individual state. CBA-CLE staff can provide a Uniform Certificate of Attendance, and it is the attendee’s responsibility to complete the accreditation outside of Colorado.
